Volunteer Firefighters: Tips To Make Your Vehicle More Visible

As a volunteer firefighter, you are probably willing to risk your life to help others who are in need of help in your community. However, one of the biggest dangers that you might pose to yourself is probably something that you haven't even thought about: driving to the accident or fire scene. Although firefighters typically drive marked trucks with lights, sirens and more, you probably use your personal vehicle when taking calls. Unfortunately, this can put you at a risk.

Luckily, there are ways that you can make your vehicle more visible so that you are safe when taking a call. Try these tips, and you can help ensure that others on the road see you when you're rushing to help the people of your community.

Invest in an LED Lightbar

One excellent solution is to invest in an LED lightbar to attach to the top of your vehicle or to place in your dashboard. This lightbar will light up much like the lights on a fire truck or police car do, and they're great for grabbing attention and letting others on the road know what you are up to. Before investing in these lights, however, you should talk to someone from the fire department first; many areas have restrictions about who can use these lights, and there might be laws in place about the size or colors of lightbars that you can use.

Add Reflective Tape

One great idea to make your vehicle more noticeable on the road is to add reflective tape to the sides, back and top of your vehicle. Then, people will be more likely to see you coming when you are rushing to a call, and you'll be less likely to be involved in an accident.

Attach a Fire Department Decal or Sticker

Ask someone from the fire department to give you a bumper sticker or decal that you can attach to your vehicle. Although these stickers and decals are often small, they are generally highly reflective. Plus, when other drivers see them, they will know that you are a volunteer at the fire department.

As a volunteer firefighter, you probably find yourself rushing to the scene of an accident or fire fairly regularly. This can put you at risk of an accident, so it's important to ensure that you're easily seen by other drivers. Luckily, following these steps will help you stay as safe as possible.
