OCT 07 - Prepped HS Parts
for Priming - 6.0 Hours
I started today by edge finishing the remaining HS skin.
Then I deburred both HS skins. I have some additional information regarding hole
deburring methods. I had posted a few days back that I was using a Cleveland Tool
Hex Deburring
Tool in my cordless drill for deburring holes. This is the method that I
used on the first HS skin today. The hex tool has a single hole cut in it and so
it doesn't take very much material off. However, I am finding that on 3/32" holes,
it doesn't really remove the burrs as much as it just flattens them. If I follow
up with the 1" scotchbrite wheel in my die grinder it works OK.
I ended up using the Planetools.com
Speed Deburring Tool with a standard #40 countersink on the other skin.
Although it takes off more material, it really puts a nice finish on the hole with
no additional work required. I just give it 2 turns per hole.
Now that everything was deburred, it was time to dimple. I used my
3/32" tank dimple die set for the understructure. It puts a slightly deeper
dimple than a standard set so that the skins fit better. On the skins I used a standard
3/32" dimple set.

I used the DRDT-2 for a while but realized the Pneumatic Squeezer would be faster.
I still need to build a stand for the DRDT-2 and bolt it to the table. It tends
to move around unless it's fastened.

The squeezer makes short work out of dimpling.
But it also makes short work of punching extra holes if you're not careful!

The first (and hopefully last) extra hole in my airplane. After searching a number
of forums, I know the answer that Van's will give me. "Press!" I will just rivet
it and put some JB Weld / Filler in there and paint it. I got lucky - it's on the
bottom.
While I was working with my happy trigger finger, my wife (the sweetheart she is)
was building me a sweet PVC / chicken wire painting stand. She made it 3' x 7' with
6 legs. I got out my spray bottle and Scotchbrite pad and went to work cleaning
the ribs and skins.

The parts hanging up to dry. Tomorrow's gameplan: Prekote -> 2 Part AKZO Epoxy
Primer.
