16 SEP 07 - Left HS Ready for Deburring, Right HS Work - 4 Hours

More work on the left HS. I clecoed HS-810-1 and HS-814-1 reinforcement angles to the front spar and then with everything clamped in place, I match drilled all of the holes in the front flange of HS-405. Since I don't have an angle drill, I used my dremel with a #40 drill bit to pilot drill, and then final drilled from the front with a 12" #30 bit.

HS-404 Rear Flange
This angle is from the front. You can see the pilot holes have been drilled and I am about to final drill to #30. I left a little extra material on the flange of HS-404 where it attaches to the spar and I drilled the holes a little closer together than what the plan calls for to avoid edge distance problems.

Once those holes are drilled, I final drilled all of the holes in the left HS skin. I drilled every other hole, moved all of the clecos, and then drilled the remaining holes.

Then the skin comes off and you drill the outboard most holes on the reinforcement angles, HS-810-1 and HS-814-1.

Wash, rinse, repeat all steps for the right Horizontal Stabilizer.

Marking Centerline on HS-405
Here is the right side HS-405. I am drawing a line down the center of the flange for alignment.

Fitting HS-404 and HS-405
Once the alignment lines are drawn on the flanges of HS-404 and HS-405, you reinsert them, center the alignment lines in the holes in the skin, and then clamp and match drill HS-405. This is as far as I got today. I have a small amount of the flange (1/32") protruding past the edge of the skin. I measured the flange in different places and it varies in width, so I think that I will just align the rib using the centerline and sand/file the portion that protrudes. I had a slight bit of overlap on the left side as well.
